The Supreme Court of Ohio recently released statistics for case filings in all state courts in Ohio for 2013. Franklin County was again among the busiest domestic relations courts in the state.
With respect to marriage terminations with children, Franklin County had the most new filings of any county in 2013 with 1,340 new filings. The only other county with at least 1000 such filings was Cuyahoga County, which had 1,152 new filings in 2013. Franklin County also saw the highest volume of marriage termination cases filed without children with there being 1,731 such new case filings in 2013. Again, Cuyahoga County again had the second most marriage termination cases without children, seeing 1,624 such filings. But overall, statewide divorce rates in Ohio were down 5% from 2012 and at the lowest rate since 2004.
That pattern carries over to post-decree actions as well, with Franklin County having the most ‘reactivated’ cases (938) in 2013 and Cuyahoga County having the second most (582). However, Cuyahoga County appears to have been much more litigious in post-decree cases with having 392 trials by a magistrate, whereas Franklin County only had 31 trials by magistrates in change of custody cases.
