Researchers in Residence Scheme (RiRS)

This scheme supports teachers who wish to learn by exploring existing research in their school context. This may, for example, be through interrogating, synthesising, sharing, and applying research in their practice. The RiRS places a strong emphasis on research activities that strengthen the links between research, policy and practice and on collaboration among teachers, and between teachers and other educational researchers.

Information on the projects selected for funding can be found in the Cosán Learning areas below:

Leading Learning

• Beech Hill College, Co Monaghan, focused on sharing classroom practice and methodologies via teacher collaboration and student feedback. The project was led by Sinéad McColgan, Post-primary Deputy Principal with the support of Principal, Patrick McArdle.
• Scoil Íde, Co. Limerick, focused on the benefits of philosophy for children. The project was led by Colm O’Connor, Primary teacher, with the support of Principal, Ray D’Arcy.
• Hamilton High School, Co. Cork, focused on physical environments which are found to be conducive to enhancing student creativity. The project was led by Cinnire Taighde, Cathal McCarthy, Post-primary teacher, with the support of Principal, Leona Foran
• St Brendan’s Community School, Co. Offaly, focused on retrieval techniques in lesson planning to support teaching and learning and to improve student recall and comprehension of key information. This project was led by Cinnirí Taighde, Beverley Lavin and Paula Mangan, Post-primary teachers, with the support of Principal, John Kennedy.
• Holy Family Community School and Old Bawn Community School, Co. Dublin, focused on the impact of using school polytunnels to maximise the learning of LCA students. This project was led by Cinnirí Taighde, Derek Maher and Sarah Gibbons, Post-primary Deputy Principals, with the support of Principals, Ingrid Fallon and Ursula McCabe.
• St Nicholas National School, Co. Galway, focused on the structured collection of oral history, “When We Were Young”. This project was led by Cinnire Taighde, Seán Leonard, Primary teacher, with the support of Principal, Michael Gallagher.
• Bushypark National School, Co. Galway, focused on the structured collection of oral history, “When We Were Young”. The project was led by Cinnire Taighde, Maria Burke, Primary teacher, with the support of Principal, Muiríosa Nic Cumhaill.
• Presentation College Bray, Co. Wicklow, focused on the role of emotional co-regulation in discipline and the importance of teacher-student connection. This project was led by Cinnire Taighde, Anne Marie O’Brien, Post-primary teacher, with the support of Principal, Martin Locke.

Wellbeing

• Piper’s Hill College, Co. Kildare, focused on the impact of a Restorative Practice approach on student and teacher wellbeing. This project was led by Cinnire Taighde, Joy Coleman, Post-primary teacher, with the support of Principal, Caroline Herity.
• Thomond Community College, Co. Limerick, focused on the exploration of the possible association between the naturalistic practices within the school and its identification as a site for the development of democratic practices. This project was led by Cinnire Taighde, Donal Doody, Post-primary teacher, with the support of Principal, Vivienne Hogan.
• South Lee Educate Together National School, Co. Cork, focused on the benefit of professional supervision on the wellbeing of school staff. This project was led by Cinnire Taighde, David Cashman, Primary Principal.
• Tramore Educate Together National School, Co. Waterford, focused on the relationship between a school garden and student wellbeing. This project was led by Cinnire Taighde, Joey Miller, Primary teacher, with the support of Principal, Eilish Kelly.
• St Aidan’s Parish School, Co. Wexford, focused on the potential impact of extra-curricular activities on Primary teachers’ and pupils’ academic and social-emotional outcomes, with a focus on wellbeing. This project was led by Cinnire Taighde, Michael Doyle, Primary teacher, with the support of Principal, Frank Murphy.
• Avondale Community College, Co. Wicklow, focused on a whole school strength-based intervention, using the science of Positive Psychology. This project was led by Cinnire Taighde, Yvonne Brennan, Post-primary teacher, with the support of Principal, Elaine Fitzgerald.
• Holy Cross National School, Co. Waterford, focused on pupils’ need to learn independent wellbeing skills. This project was led by Cinnire Taighde, Susan Brophy, Primary teacher, with the support of Principal, John Kindlon.

Inclusion

• North Wicklow Educate Together Secondary School, Co. Wicklow, focused on neurodiverse and neurotypical student cohorts. The project was led by Cinnire Taighde, Lorraine Kenny, Post-primary teacher, with the support of Principal, Billy Redmond.
• Coláiste Bhaile Chláir, Co. Galway, focused on the impact of a teacher designed “Learning to Learn: A Non-Academic Skill Learning Intervention” on students referred to the Special Education/Guidance Counselling department in the school. This project was led by Cinnire Taighde, Gearóid Keane, Post-primary teacher, with the support of Principal, Alan Mongey.
• Lucan Community College, Co. Dublin, focused on student voice in Politics and Society classrooms. This project was led by Cinnire Taighde, Grainne McKeever, Post-primary teacher, with the support of Principal, Diane Birnie.

ICT

• Woodbrook College, Co. Dublin, focused on the use of Virtual Reality (VR) in Post-primary education. This project was led by Cinnire Taighde, Lee O’Donnell, Post-primary teacher, with the support of Principal, Henry Hurley.

Literacy & Numeracy

• Drumlease National School, Co. Leitrim, focused on implementing and evaluating a paired Maths initiative at different class levels. This project was led by Cinnire Taighde, Marie Brennan, Primary Principal.
• Edmund Rice College, Co. Dublin, focused on literacy and assessment, reading for pleasure, and supporting teachers. This project was led by Cinnire Taighde, Stacy Kenny, Post-primary Deputy Principal, with the support of Principal, Brendan Harrington.
• Davis College, Co. Cork, focused on Maths anxiety. This project was led by Cinnire Taighde, Brendan O’Sullivan, Post-primary teacher, with the support of Principal, Stephen Gilbert.
• Scoil Bhríde, Co. Laois, focused on a methodology to aid struggling readers with reading fluency. This project was led by Cinnire Taighde, Jane Doheny, Primary teacher, with the support of Principal, Muriel Wall-Coughlan.
• Patrickswell National School, Co. Limerick, focused on the impact of “Literacy Lift-Off” as a reading recovery programme to help counteract the impact of school closures due to COVID-19 on pupils’ reading levels and reading self-concept. This project was led by Cinnire Taighde, Chloe Brennan, Primary teacher, with the support of Principal, David Bulfin.
• Edmund Rice College, Co. Cork, focused on the use of “Maths Eyes” to offset the regression of first year students to promote greater positivity towards Maths. This project was led by Cinnire Taighde, Judith Callan Gough, Post-primary teacher, with the support of Principal, Adele Flynn.
• St Philomena’s National School, Co. Offaly, focused on the use of picture books in Maths lessons. This project was led by Cinnire Taighde, Gráinne Higgins, Primary teacher, with the support of Principal, Bridget Clear.
• Central Remedial Clinic School, Co. Dublin, focused on early literacy development, to identify, evaluate, and adapt current suggested teaching approaches recommended for Primary Literacy teaching. This project was led by Cinnire Taighde, Sarah Christian, Primary teacher, with the support of Principal, Mary Collins.
• Bishopstown Community School, Co. Cork, focused on using numeracy in traditionally non-numerate subjects to develop a positive disposition towards logical reasoning and problem solving. This project was be led by Cinnire Taighde, Peter Fitton, Post-primary teacher, with the support of Principal, Edwina Gottstein.

  The Teaching Council is the regulator of the teaching profession in Ireland. Our role is to protect the public by promoting and regulating professional standards in teaching.

  We do this through the statutory registration of teachers, ensuring a highly qualified teaching profession, whose members meet and uphold high standards of professional competence and conduct.
